The rankings, created in collaboration with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, are based on a survey of nearly 17,000 people worldwide. Countries are assessed across 10 key subcategories, including quality of life, business climate, cultural influence, and adventure. The result is a comprehensive snapshot of how these nations are viewed on the world stage.

Switzerland Retains the Top Spot

For the third consecutive year and seventh time in nine years, Switzerland takes the top spot in the 2024 rankings. Known for its stability and high quality of life, Switzerland excelled in categories like entrepreneurship and being “open for business.” According to U.S. News reporter Elliott Davis, these factors make Switzerland a consistent leader in global perceptions.

The U.S. Makes a Notable Leap

One of the biggest surprises in this year’s report is the United States, which jumped two spots to land at number three—its highest ranking ever. The U.S. saw significant improvements in the “open for business” and “movers” categories, as well as maintaining its dominance in agility and power. Although the U.S. often ranks lower in quality of life metrics, its strength in entrepreneurship and innovation propelled it upwards.

Global Shifts: Gains and Losses

Several countries made notable moves in the rankings. China jumped four spots to number 16, despite mixed perceptions about its global standing. On the other hand, Ukraine, which had surged in the rankings after Russia’s invasion, dropped 12 spots to 80, the largest fall in this year’s report. UAE Leads in Future Growth

In the "movers" subranking, which evaluates a country's potential for future growth, the United Arab Emirates ranked first. Known for its dynamic and rapidly evolving economy, the UAE has become a global leader in sectors like technology, infrastructure, and sustainability. The UAE’s high ranking signals its growing influence on the global stage, particularly in emerging markets.

Focus on Quality of Life, Entrepreneurship, and Adventure

The report also ranks countries across specific attributes, offering a closer look at their unique strengths:

  • Quality of Life: Denmark leads this category, followed by Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, and Canada. These countries excel in areas like healthcare, education, and income equality.
  • Entrepreneurship: Germany tops the list for entrepreneurship, thanks to its innovative economy, skilled workforce, and robust infrastructure. The U.S. ranks second, showcasing its business-friendly environment and dominance in global innovation.
  • Cultural Influence: Italy, France, and the United States lead the cultural influence rankings, reflecting their impact on fashion, entertainment, and global trends.
  • Adventure: Brazil was ranked as the best country for adventure, followed by Italy, Greece, Spain, and Thailand, emphasizing their appeal to travelers seeking thrilling and unique experiences.
