DEWA Boosts Desalinated Water Production By 4.6% to Support Surging Demand and Rapid Growth
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) reported a record 40.5 billion imperial gallons of desalinated water produced in Q3 2024, marking a 4.64% increase from the same period in 2023.
The rise aligns with DEWA’s commitment to meet the escalating water demand fueled by Dubai’s accelerated economic growth and expanding population. Peak daily demand for desalinated water reached 455 million imperial gallons, a 4.92% increase year-over-year, underscoring the Emirate’s thriving construction and development sectors.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, outlined the Authority’s long-term strategy to expand desalination capacity from 495 to 735 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) by 2030. This capacity increase supports both the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aligning with DEWA’s mission to deliver reliable and uninterrupted water services that meet international standards of efficiency and reliability.
“Innovation and advanced technology are key to expanding water resources and enhancing DEWA’s state-of-the-art infrastructure,”
Al Tayer noted, highlighting DEWA’s investment in Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology, which consumes less energy than conventional Multi-Stage Flash distillation (MSF) plants. DEWA’s goal is to produce 100% of its desalinated water by 2030 through a sustainable mix of clean energy and waste heat.
DEWA’s sustainable initiatives reflect its commitment to securing Dubai’s water supply amid the Emirate’s unprecedented growth, ensuring both environmental responsibility and resource reliability for years to come.
