Dubai Bans E-Scooters and E-Bikes in JBR to Enhance Safety for Residents and Visitors
In a bid to enhance safety for both residents and visitors, all e-scooters and e-bikes have been banned in the Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) community. This decision, confirmed by Dubai Community Management, aims to prevent accidents and maintain a safer environment within the bustling area.
Battery-powered mobility devices are now prohibited on the ground and plaza levels of The Walk at JBR. Clear notices in both Arabic and English, featuring crossed-out icons of e-bikes and e-scooters, have been prominently displayed throughout the area to inform the public.
JBR, known for its vibrant atmosphere and family-friendly environment, has taken this step to preserve its pedestrian-friendly appeal. The ban has been well-received by residents and frequent visitors who have expressed concerns over safety issues associated with e-scooters.
Calls for stricter regulations on e-scooters have been ongoing, with many residents highlighting the dangers posed by reckless riders. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) had already implemented a ban on carrying e-scooters inside the Dubai Metro and Tram due to fire risks, a rule in place since March 1, 2024.
Additionally, Dubai authorities are testing an AI-powered robot in collaboration with Dubai Police to detect violations by e-scooter and bicycle users. While no fines have been issued yet, violations such as not wearing helmets, parking in unauthorized areas, and riding in pedestrian zones can result in penalties of up to Dh300.
There are suggestions from road safety experts to introduce license plates or unique IDs for e-scooters to further enhance safety and accountability on the roads. Since April 2022, the RTA has issued over 63,500 e-scooter permits, with strict guidelines in place for riders, including a minimum age requirement of 16 years.
This initiative reflects Dubai’s ongoing commitment to improving safety and ensuring a comfortable environment for its residents and visitors.
