Dubai to Become Home to the Largest Airport in the World by 2050

Upon its completion, the airport's objective is to have the capacity to cater to a staggering 255 million passengers each year.

Dubai South, the urban master developer, has announced via Twitter that Dubai is positioned to become the home of the world's largest airport. This extensive development, covering an area of 145 square kilometers, not only includes the airport but also incorporates a business-friendly free zone and residential options. Dubai South aims to create an integrated aviation and logistics ecosystem, featuring a comprehensive multi-modal transport infrastructure connecting air, land, and sea.

By 2050, the aim is for Al Maktoum International Airport, situated in Dubai South, to become the largest airport globally, with the capacity to handle up to 255 million passengers each year.

A recent tweet from Dubai South stated,

"Once complete, #DubaiSouth will house the world's largest airport, accompanied by a multi-modal transport infrastructure that connects air, land, and sea. Additionally, it will offer the benefits of a business-friendly free zone and a wide variety of residential choices."

Earlier this year, there were indications of the continuation of the previously established plan for the phased expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), at a cost of Dh120 billion ($33 billion).

DWC, Dubai's second international airport, commenced cargo operations on June 27, 2010, and passenger flights began in October 2013, with a terminal capacity initially designed for 5-7 million passengers.

Upon completion, DWC will emerge as the world's largest global gateway, capable of accommodating over 160 million passengers annually. Furthermore, it will function as a multi-modal logistics hub, handling approximately 12 million tonnes of freight.

DWC serves as the focal point for a multi-phase development plan encompassing six distinct zones within Dubai Zone. These zones include Dubai Logistics City, Commercial City, Residential City, Aviation City, and Golf City.

World’s busiest airport

Dubai International (DXB) has retained its status as the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic, holding this position for the ninth consecutive year in 2022, as confirmed by the Airports Council International (ACI).

In 2022, Dubai Airport experienced remarkable growth, with passenger traffic surpassing 66 million, more than doubling previous figures. This increase was fueled by a robust recovery in both local and international aviation sectors. As a result, DXB has revised its forecast for 2023, anticipating a passenger volume of 78 million.
