EGA Breaks Ground on Next-Generation Smelting Technology Pilot
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has commenced construction of 10 pilot reduction cells for its EX smelting technology at Al Taweelah.
This next-generation innovation aims to redefine aluminium production with advanced Industry 4.0 capabilities, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.
EX is designed to produce more aluminium with reduced energy consumption and emissions. It incorporates cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, enabling real-time data collection and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for autonomous control of pots, cranes, and vehicles. EGA’s vision for EX includes a fully self-optimising production system, integrating potline processes to reduce disruptions and maximise efficiency.
The pilot will build on EGA’s existing Industry 4.0 use cases, such as pot failure prediction, dynamic shift life prediction, and AI-driven smart cranes. The ultimate goal is to further develop digital capabilities through advanced data analytics and AI, pushing the boundaries of operational performance.
Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, remarked,
“For over 30 years, EGA has been at the forefront of aluminium smelting innovation. The EX pilot is a transformative step toward a future of smart, sustainable solutions. Our ambition is to create the world’s most efficient and sustainable aluminium production system, central to EGA’s growth strategy and commitment to sustainability.”
First hot metal production from the pilot is expected in early 2025, with large-scale industrialisation targeted by 2028.
