Global Internet Traffic Rises 17.2% in 2024 Amid Continued Growth for Major Tech Companies

Cloudflare’s latest annual report reveals another year of substantial growth in global Internet traffic, which increased by 17.2% in 2024. While growth was relatively moderate through mid-August, a consistent acceleration occurred from September through November. Notably, the report highlights visible disruptions caused by network outages when plotted on traffic graphs.

Over two-thirds of mobile Internet traffic originated from Android devices in 2024. Regional differences remained significant, with Android capturing more than 90% of mobile traffic in over 25 countries, particularly in regions like Papua New Guinea and Bangladesh. These areas, characterized by lower gross national income per capita, contrast with markets such as Denmark, where iOS devices accounted for 66% of mobile traffic.

Mobile devices contributed to over 40% of global Internet traffic in 2024, a remarkable transformation compared to the limited mobile Internet connectivity seen just 15 years ago.

Top Performers in Tech

Google retained its position as the leading Internet service provider globally, bolstered by its extensive range of popular consumer products. Facebook, Apple, TikTok, and Amazon rounded out the top five providers in the rankings.

SpaceX’s Starlink also saw exceptional growth, with its satellite Internet traffic nearly tripling in 2024. In the U.S., Starlink traffic grew more than 2.5 times, while Brazil experienced an astounding 17x increase. Although competitors like Amazon are preparing to enter the satellite Internet market, Starlink remains a dominant force for now.

Looking Ahead

Cloudflare’s report underscores the evolving nature of global Internet usage, particularly the increasing role of mobile and satellite Internet services. As technological advancements continue, further growth and regional diversification are expected in the coming years.
