Duration of Paternity Leave

Paternity leave was officially incorporated into the UAE's labor regulations under Article 32 ('Other Leaves') of the New Employment Law. This provision grants male employees five days of paternity leave, a period that, while shorter than maternity leave, reflects a growing recognition of the importance of fathers' roles during the early days of a newborn's life. Maternity leave in the UAE varies between 45 calendar days for most employees and up to 60 days for those in the federal sector.

Eligibility and Requirements

For new fathers, understanding the paternity leave policy is crucial for balancing work and family responsibilities. To ensure a smooth process, it is advisable to notify your employer and file your leave request well in advance of the expected birth date. A copy of the child's birth certificate will be required to confirm the legal status as the child's parent.

Variations in Leave Entitlements

The duration of paternity leave can vary. While the standard entitlement is five days, some private companies offer extended leave ranging from 30 to 42 days. Government employees, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are entitled to a slightly shorter period of three days.

When to Take Paternity Leave

Eligibility for paternity leave typically requires that the employee is currently employed and may involve a minimum service period, depending on the company's policy. Employees should review their company's specific paternity leave guidelines to understand any additional requirements.

Combining Leave with Annual Leave

Once approved, paternity leave can be taken within six months of the child's birth. For those wishing to extend their time at home, combining paternity leave with annual leave is permitted, provided that both are used within the six-month timeframe.
