UAE Employees Demand Higher Pay and Benefits for Full-Time Office Return

As remote and hybrid work models continue to shape the professional landscape, employees across the UAE are increasingly requesting higher salaries and additional benefits when asked to return to the office full-time. This shift, particularly evident in the post-COVID-19 era, reflects a growing emphasis on work-life balance and job flexibility.

The Rising Demand for Flexibility

The desire for hybrid or remote work is not just a local trend but a global phenomenon. A recent survey by JLL’s ‘Future of Work’ initiative found that 48% of employees in the Middle East believe workers who attend the office regularly should receive higher pay and benefits. Dana Williamson, Head of Offices, Business Space, and Retail for the Middle East and Africa at JLL, emphasized that employees expect additional incentives to compensate for the loss of flexibility and commuting costs.

"Employees expect additional benefits if employers want them to return to the office full-time. This demand is being fueled by the need for work-life balance and the growing importance placed on flexibility,"

said Dana Williamson.

The survey highlighted that employees are requesting enhanced health insurance, wellness programs, salary increases, and performance-based financial incentives as compensation for reduced flexibility.

How Employers Are Responding

Recognizing these shifting expectations, many UAE companies are introducing higher salaries, housing allowances, transport benefits, and school fee subsidies to help employees cope with rising living costs.

"These benefits help employees manage their expenses more effectively. Some companies also offer family-friendly perks like childcare support and school fee allowances, making it easier for employees to balance work and family life,"

Williamson said.

Additionally, several organizations are implementing flexible working hours and hybrid work models to support employees in managing stress levels, productivity, and overall well-being.

A Growing Investment in Employee Wellness

Another key trend shaping the UAE workplace is the rising investment in employee well-being. Many companies are prioritizing physical and mental health initiatives, offering programs such as fitness classes, mental health support, stress management workshops, and nutrition counseling.

"Many companies in the UAE are planning to increase investments in employee well-being programs to improve productivity, engagement, and retention. Health and wellness programs have become an essential part of talent retention strategies,"

Williamson said.

As wellness initiatives and flexible work policies become key factors in attracting and retaining top talent, UAE employers are rethinking their approach to employee satisfaction.

The Future of Work in the UAE

With the demand for better benefits, flexible work options, and well-being programs at an all-time high, UAE employers must adapt to stay competitive. Companies that embrace these evolving expectations will not only enhance employee satisfaction but also strengthen their ability to attract and retain top talent in an increasingly competitive job market.
