RTA Upgrades Dubai's nol System to Enhance Payment Convenience and Technology
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has completed 40 percent of its ambitious upgrade to the nol system, transitioning from the traditional card-based ticketing model to a more advanced account-based ticketing (ABT) system. The upgrade, with a total cost of AED 550 million, is expected to be fully completed by the end of Q3 2026.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the RTA, outlined that the project is divided into three phases. The first phase involves upgrading the central system to create digital accounts for users, linking them to their existing nol cards. In the second phase, new-generation nol cards will be introduced, aligned with international standards and compatible with banking technologies. The final phase will enable the acceptance of alternative payment methods, including bank cards and digital wallets, for public transport fare payments across Dubai.
The upgraded system will introduce several advanced features, such as enabling users to create and manage accounts, link multiple nol cards (including those of family members), and control account settings. Automatic balance top-ups, digital wallet integration, and QR code-based ticketing will also be implemented, making payments more convenient for users.
Additionally, the system will support new payment technologies like facial recognition, fingerprint authentication, and digital wallet payments, extending nol card use beyond public transport to retail outlets and digital platforms across the UAE. The upgrade promises to significantly improve user experience and payment flexibility in Dubai’s public transport system.
