UAE's Fifth National Communication Report Reveals 10% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions

On the sidelines of COP28, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, today revealed the details of the UAE's fifth National Communication Report (NCR), recently approved by the Cabinet. The report is a comprehensive overview of the systematic process and substantial progress that the UAE has achieved in addressing climate change-related issues.

The UAE's fifth NCR covers the national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory, measures to mitigate GHG emissions, and a description of the country's vulnerabilities and climate change impacts. Its development was a collaborative effort led by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

The country's national GHG emissions inventory was measured and verified. It showed an overall emission reduction of 10% and a decrease in per capita emissions intensity of 11% in three years from 2019 to 2021.

NCRs are submitted every four years by member countries to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Al Mazrouei said,

"The UAE is the first country in the MENA region to develop its fifth NCR using the updated 2006 IPCC Guidelines for 2021 data. This is a testament to the country's commitment to leading climate action equitably and transparently, contributing to climate neutrality by 2050 objective."

He added,

"The report is of paramount importance as it supports our future environmental and climate objectives and sheds light on the country's innovative measures to combat climate change and safeguard ecosystems. It also explores the UAE's economic achievements and investments in hydrogen technology, nuclear energy, and solar power. The UAE has an impressive track record in the transition to clean energy, owing to its pioneering vision, innovative policies, and substantial investments. It is home to some of the largest solar and nuclear projects in the world."

The UAE's fifth NCR highlights the adoption of various advanced technologies to ensure energy supply security, price affordability, and a diversified energy mix, including hydrogen, low-speed wind, and hydropower.

It also provides a sectoral inventory of GHG in the UAE and outlines initiatives that enhance health care, education, and general wellbeing, as well as the UAE's endeavours in advancing international collaboration and partnerships that serve its vision of a sustainable future.
