UAE and Kingdom of Tonga Sign Promotion and Protection of Investment Agreement at COP28
The UAE has signed a promotion and protection of investment agreement with the Kingdom of Tonga at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Expo City Dubai, with the aim of developing prospects for cooperation between the two countries in several areas of common interest.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the UAE by Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, Minister of State, and by Siaosi Sovaleni, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga.
Al Sayegh underscored the UAE's keenness to strengthen relations with the Kingdom of Tonga, and the various opportunities to enhance cooperation between the two nations in different fields.
He also emphasised that during COP28 the UAE is focused on unifying international efforts to find practical, sustainable solutions to the most urgent challenges facing the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including the Pacific island countries, as these islands face existential risks as a result of rising sea levels.
Furthermore, Al Sayegh stressed the importance of enhancing collective action to ensure environmental sustainability, and that the UAE is committed to cooperating with the international community to reduce the effects of climate change and find solutions to this critical file.
For his part, Prime Minister Sovaleni underscored the keenness of the Kingdom of Tonga to strengthen bilateral collaboration in areas of mutual concern to serve the common interests of the two countries at various levels.
He praised the UAE's success in hosting this exceptional international event and its endeavours to enhance global climate action.
