UAE Pavilion at COP29 Focuses on Water Resilience and Food Security
Tuesday’s sessions at the UAE Pavilion during COP29 highlighted the critical connection between water, food security, and the agricultural cycle, emphasizing global collaboration to combat water scarcity and climate change.
The day began with Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, highlighting water's role in sustaining human dignity and global ecosystems. Professor Daouda Ngom, Senegal’s Minister of Environment and Ecological Transition, underscored the significance of the UAE-Senegal partnership for the 2026 UN Water Conference, which aims to address water scarcity and its link to climate change.
Expert panels discussed water as a cross-sectoral issue. Shaima Gargash from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined planning efforts, while international experts explored integrating water solutions into climate strategies. María Fernanda Espinosa, former President of the UN General Assembly, stressed water's role in mitigating climate vulnerability and fostering peace.
Academic insights were presented during the UAE Universities Climate Network session, with institutions like Khalifa University and the American University in Dubai emphasizing innovations in water systems. Meanwhile, bio-saline agriculture was explored by Dr. Tarifa Al Zaabi of ICBA, who highlighted the role of partnerships in addressing water salinity challenges.
The day concluded with a national statement from Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to climate action and sustainable water solutions. This aligned with the broader theme of continuity and collaboration, setting the stage for future climate resilience initiatives.
