UAE: Essential Packing and Vaccination Guidelines for Haj Pilgrims
Preparations Urged for Hajj Pilgrims Amid Intense Summer Heat.
The annual Hajj pilgrimage will commence on June 14, 2024, as announced by Saudi Arabia. Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims who are physically and financially capable. The pilgrimage involves a series of rituals over at least four days in Makkah and its surroundings.
Given the expected extreme summer temperatures of up to 44°C, Saudi authorities have urged pilgrims to take extensive preparatory measures. Last year, thousands of cases of heat stress were reported, highlighting the need for vigilance.
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention has echoed Saudi Arabia's advice, stressing the importance of health precautions for residents planning to undertake the Hajj. Vaccines are provided free of charge to UAE pilgrims at health centers under Emirates Health Services.
Preparatory Steps for Pilgrims:
- Medical Kit: A comprehensive medical kit is essential, including hand sanitizer, wound care supplies, fever and pain relief medication, moisturizers, burn and allergy creams, masks, tissues, scissors, and nail clippers.
- Personal Items: Necessary items include toiletries, a handheld fan, an insulated metal water bottle, and a light-colored sun umbrella.
- Health and Fitness: A doctor's consultation is recommended for those with chronic diseases. Pilgrims should maintain detailed medical records, adhere to a healthy diet, and enhance physical fitness at least three weeks before travel to manage fatigue and health concerns.
- Vaccinations: Essential vaccinations should be taken at least 15 days before the travel date. Required vaccines include:
- Meningococcal vaccine
- Seasonal influenza vaccine
- Pneumococcal vaccine for those 65 and older, and for individuals 19 and older with chronic diseases.
