UAE Underscores Water Security and Sustainability at Arab Water Forum

Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), emphasized the critical importance of water security and sustainability during his address at the Arab Water Forum in Abu Dhabi.

Al Olama highlighted the UAE's dedication to raising awareness about water conservation and its pioneering efforts to ensure a secure water future.

"The UAE has made significant progress in conserving water through innovative projects like water desalination plants and advanced networks,"

Al Olama remarked. He noted that non-conventional water resources, including desalinated seawater and treated wastewater, currently account for 53% of the UAE’s water supply.

Al Olama outlined the country’s long-term vision for water security, referencing the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, which aims to reduce water demand by 21%, increase treated water reuse to 95%, and improve water scarcity indicators. Additionally, he noted the development of the nation’s first hydrogeological map, a crucial step in documenting and managing water sources.

The UAE’s focus on water sustainability extends to innovation and international collaboration. Efforts such as rainwater harvesting and wastewater reuse for irrigation are among the strategies being deployed to conserve natural water resources and reduce environmental impact.

A recent United Nations report highlighted the UAE's success, citing 100% access to safe drinking water and 79% achievement in integrated water resources management, marking the UAE as a regional leader in water security. The country is committed to improving these results by aligning water, energy, environment, and food strategies in the coming years.
