UAE's 2024 Cultural Milestones Showcase Creativity and Innovation
The UAE’s cultural achievements in 2024 underscored its position as a global hub for creativity, innovation, and heritage preservation. Significant initiatives demonstrated the nation’s commitment to transforming the cultural sector into a pillar of sustainable economic growth while celebrating its rich history and diverse artistic identity.
Key developments included the launch of the National Grant Program for Culture and Creativity and the upgrade of the UAE Medal for Culture and Creativity to the UAE Order for Culture and Creativity. Additionally, a federal decree-law was issued to empower the arts sector by regulating non-profit artistic institutions and providing support for artists and the creative community.
Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the establishment of the UAE National Orchestra was announced, blending the nation’s musical heritage with global contemporary styles to foster unity and cultural expression.
Archaeological discoveries added depth to the UAE’s historical narrative. Notable findings included ancient artefacts in Al Dour Cave (Fujairah), Bronze Age relics in Umm Al Nar (Abu Dhabi), and Roman gold coins in Umm Al Qaiwain. New cultural landmarks such as the Noor & Salam Museum in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Photography Museum further enriched the UAE’s cultural landscape.
The UAE ranked first in the Arab world and 26th globally in the Global Knowledge Index 2024, reflecting advancements in knowledge and education. Over 28.2 million students participated in the eighth edition of the Reading Challenge, while the Sheikh Zayed Book Award attracted submissions from 75 countries, with notable first-time entries from regions such as South America and Africa.
The Sharjah International Book Fair maintained its status as the world’s largest book fair for rights trading, hosting 2,500 publishers and attracting 1.82 million visitors. Similarly, the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair welcomed over 200,000 attendees and 1,350 publishers from 90 countries.
The Dubai Cultural Grant Programme, launched to provide AED 180 million in grants over ten years, aims to develop the UAE’s cultural and creative industries, supporting local talents and strengthening the nation’s position as a leader in global cultural innovation.
These achievements highlight the UAE’s ongoing dedication to fostering creativity, preserving heritage, and building a vibrant cultural identity for future generations.
