The UAE has introduced the 'Blue Residency' visa, which lasts for 10 years, targeting environmental enthusiasts.

This initiative aims to generate job opportunities in sustainability fields, providing both passion and job security. Dr. Amna Al Dahak emphasizes its attractiveness to sustainability experts globally, while Libbie Burtinshaw predicts employment prospects for trained individuals in sustainability, benefiting newcomers and eligible existing residents alike.

Azeem Zainulbhai, the co-founder and chief product officer at talent-on-demand platform Outsized, identified the sectors where job creation would occur due to the 'Blue Residency' visa. He emphasized that the long-term residency would stimulate employment opportunities focused on environmental sustainability.

  • Environmental, conservation, and governance (ECG) sector: Roles dedicated to formulating policies and practices that advance environmental governance and regulatory frameworks.
  • Sustainable development: Professionals will drive efforts to merge sustainability into various industries, balancing economic growth with ecological preservation for future generations.
  • Marine life conservation: Positions related to the preservation and restoration of marine ecosystems, including research, monitoring, and active conservation projects.
  • Climate action: Employment in this area will be aimed at supporting international climate objectives, including carbon reduction and the promotion of renewable energy sources.
“These roles will play a pivotal role in positioning the UAE as a frontrunner in sustainability and environmental conservation,”

said Zainulbhai.

The UAE Cabinet had previously encouraged sustainability advocates and experts to apply for the Blue Residency visa through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security. However, it's currently unclear whether the applications are open at this time.

Green skills

According to the government, the 10-year Blue Residency visa is available to individuals who have contributed to environmental protection across various domains such as marine life, land-based ecosystems, air quality, sustainability technologies, or circular economy. Eligibility extends to members of international organizations, associations, non-governmental organizations, global award winners, and distinguished activists and researchers.

Zainulbhai emphasized that candidates for the Blue Residency visa must possess expertise in diverse specialized fields, including environmental sciences, sustainable development practices, marine biology, and policy-making related to climate action and conservation.

Furthermore, the expert foresees the Blue Residency visa enhancing opportunities for freelancers and consultants in the UAE. By offering extended residency options, it provides stability and an attractive base for professionals specializing in environmental and sustainability sectors, fostering personal growth and professional development.

Job flexibility

The UAE offers various long-term residency options, such as 10-year Golden Visas for investors, scientists, outstanding students, and five-year Green Visas for skilled professionals and freelancers. These align with global trends in remote work and work-life balance, leveraging robust infrastructure and attractive incentives, making UAE a top destination for dynamic talent.
