UAE Cabinet Approves Major Initiatives on Genome Program, Digital Transformation, and Economic Partnerships

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, chaired a UAE Cabinet meeting at Qasr Al Watan in Abu Dhabi.

HH Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the significant achievements of the Emirates Genome Council, including the collection of over 600,000 samples as part of the Emirati Genome Programme. The initiative aims to gather one million samples, creating a comprehensive genetic map to enhance targeted healthcare treatments. Over 1,000 medical professionals have been trained to support this effort.

"The contribution of over 600,000 citizens ensures the development of a clear map of genetic and hereditary diseases, aiding in the creation of targeted treatments,"

stated HH Sheikh Mohammed. He announced the experimental launch of premarital screening to cover genetic and hereditary diseases, reflecting the UAE's commitment to advancing healthcare.

The Cabinet also approved the formation of a working team led by the Ministry of Economy to revitalize the UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry. This aims to enhance the economy, open new markets, and build global partnerships, enabling local companies to enter international markets.

In tourism, the Cabinet committed to the principles of the International Code for the Protection of Tourists, issued by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. This initiative will guide UAE tourism institutions, supporting the nation's reputation for safety and excellence in international tourism.

The Cabinet tasked the Ministry of Finance with representing the UAE in BRICS financial track working groups, in partnership with the Central Bank of the UAE. This move underscores the UAE's dedication to global economic cooperation and diversification.

In digital transformation, the Cabinet approved a general framework for sustainable government digital initiatives and an ethical charter for the use of artificial intelligence. These measures ensure compliance with high safety standards and promote the responsible development of AI technologies.

Legislatively, the Cabinet approved a new federal law on road traffic, addressing vehicle classification, self-driving vehicles, and the integration of modern technologies on roads. This aligns with the UAE's rapid transportation advancements and commitment to road safety.

The achievements of the Emirates Genome Council were reviewed, including the launch of the National Genome Strategy, which aims to advance precision medicine and personalized healthcare. The Emirati Genome Programme has collected samples from 60% of its target, facilitating the development of cures for genetic disorders.

To support sustainable digital transformation, the Cabinet adopted policies integrating sustainability into government digital initiatives and approved the Ethical Charter for AI development and use.

Other significant approvals included policies on federal government rentals, inventory management, and fixed asset management. The Cabinet also approved a guide for public-private partnership projects and new legislative measures on communicable diseases, financial restructuring, maritime law, and anti-money laundering efforts.

In economic affairs, the Cabinet endorsed a regulatory framework for cross-border licensing of financial products within the Gulf Cooperation Council and reviewed the UAE’s climate action achievements, including preparations for COP28 and various national strategies for climate neutrality and low-carbon development.

The session concluded with ratifications of international agreements, including a wind power project with Kazakhstan and various legal and economic partnerships with Kenya, Costa Rica, Mauritius, Congo Brazzaville, and Oman.
