In a bid to enhance road safety, the Dubai Police have announced a new regulation allowing for the impoundment of vehicles for up to 30 days for various traffic offenses. This significant amendment, effective immediately, aims to deter reckless driving behaviors that jeopardize public safety.
Key offenses leading to a 30-day impoundment include:
- Using mobile phones while driving: Defined as being distracted by devices.
- Tailgating: Failing to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
- Sudden deviation: Changing lanes or veering off unexpectedly, posing a danger to other road users.
- Failure of heavy vehicles to adhere to lane discipline.
Under federal traffic law, these violations incur fines ranging from Dh400 to Dh1,000 and result in four black points against the driver's record.
Additional offenses attracting a 14-day vehicle impoundment include:
- Entering the road without ensuring it is clear.
- Reversing dangerously.
- Lane indiscipline.
- Stopping in the middle of the road without cause.
- Dangerous overtaking.
- Driving without necessary safety and security conditions.
- Stopping on the road shoulder in non-emergency situations.
- Driving without a license plate.
- Obstructing traffic.
- Unauthorized vehicle color modifications.
This amendment builds on previous measures, including a Dh50,000 fee for the release of vehicles seized for serious offenses such as reckless driving and running red lights. In the first half of 2024, reckless driving was linked to 94 accidents in Dubai.
A recent survey revealed concerning trends in driver behavior, with one in three admitting to using mobile phones while driving, despite 90% recognizing the dangers of distracted driving. The findings highlight the urgent need for these new penalties to promote safer road practices among motorists.
