The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) today announced the selection of Emirati crew member Shareef AlRomaithi for the second analog study of the UAE Analog Programme, as part of NASA’s Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) Campaign 7 Mission 2.
The second phase of the four-phase analog study on Earth will commence on May 10, with AlRomaithi joining the primary crew alongside Jason Lee, Stephanie Navarro, and Piyumi Wijesekara. They will inhabit the HERA habitat at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, USA for 45 days, exiting on June 24. HERA simulates space-like conditions to study crew adaptation for deep space missions to the Moon, Mars, etc. The UAE plays a vital role in this international effort, with 18 human health studies aimed at understanding physiological, behavioral, and psychological responses, led by UAEU, MBRU, and AUS in collaboration with MBRSC.
Salem Humaid AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, announced Shareef AlRomaithi's selection for the UAE Analog Programme's second analog study at the HERA habitat, a significant stride towards the UAE's space exploration vision. This mission, in collaboration with NASA, aims to deepen understanding of the challenges of long-duration space travel through Earth-based experiments, crucial for Mars missions.
AlRomaithi, a seasoned pilot with over 16 years of experience, brings expertise from commanding Boeing aircraft. Holding multiple degrees in aerospace engineering and aviation management, including a doctorate from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he's recognized as the world's youngest aviation doctoral graduate. AlRomaithi joins the second group of HERA volunteers, with subsequent study phases scheduled for August 9 and November 1, 2024.
