The psychological challenges faced by content creators were a focal point during the first day of the 1 Billion Followers Summit, now in its third edition, held in Dubai today.
Experts and content creators gathered to discuss the mental strain that comes with widespread reach and constant engagement on social media platforms.
Dr. Jana Bou Reslan, a specialist in educational psychology and the UAE representative in TikTok’s “Creating Change” programme, highlighted the importance of clear planning to avoid psychological exhaustion. She emphasized the need for creators to separate their personal identity from their content, reminding them that they control the content, not the other way around. Dr. Bou Reslan also urged creators to set clear standards for sharing personal details and to maintain a balance between authentic audience engagement and the avoidance of portraying unrealistic perfection.
Kareem Ismail, a speaker and positive psychology coach, addressed the pressures of constant public exposure. He stressed that a clear purpose, psychological preparation, and self-development are essential for managing these pressures and building resilience to stay in the industry long-term.
Sarah Sabbagh, General Manager of Works180, discussed strategies for handling social media criticism, emphasizing that continuous improvement, skill enhancement, and delivering quality content can help reduce harsh feedback and prevent burnout.
As content creation continues to evolve, experts stressed the importance of adopting healthy strategies to balance professional success with mental well-being, encouraging creators to maintain their personal identity while thriving in the digital space.
