13th Sikka Art & Design Festival Transforms Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood

The 13th Sikka Art & Design Festival, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is bringing Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood to life with over 350 artworks from UAE, Gulf, and international artists. Running until 9 February 2025, the festival supports the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy and aims to position Dubai as a global cultural hub.

Murals & Installations

  • 13 murals showcase diverse themes, including ‘A Heritage of Night’ by Eman Alrashdi (inspired by Starry Night), ‘Child’s Play’ by Perryhan El-Ashmawi, and ‘Rooted Connections’ by Karim Jabbari, blending calligraphy with poetry.
  • Notable works include ‘Dream Big’ by Noé Peiró (Dubai’s transformation), ‘Sofra’ by Predrag Radovanović (Serbian unity), and ‘Seeds of Tomorrow’ by Mariam Eid Al Mansoori.

Sculptures & Art Installations

  • Over 40 installations such as ‘Shells’ by Dr Mohamed Yousif (Dubai’s maritime heritage) and ‘Dubai Heart’ by Azza Al Qubaisi (local traditions).
  • Global artists include ‘Starry Sky in Dubai’ by Liu Yang (China), ‘Conversation’ by Mohammed Al Thagafi (Saudi Arabia), and ‘Fractal’ by Ana Maria Negară (Romania).
  • Interactive pieces like ‘Make-A-Friend’ by Hend Almurid and ‘The Yellow Paper Boat’ by Spatial Forces celebrate sustainability and community engagement.

Sustainability & Heritage Themes

  • Works like ‘Renewal’ (recycled wood) and ‘Falling’ (textile-based, recyclable materials) highlight environmental consciousness.
  • Emirati traditions are celebrated through pieces like ‘Kwaashi’ by Maryam Al Zaabi (inspired by traditional earrings) and ‘Kajoja’s Lamma’ (Talli-making).

Collaborations

Organised in partnership with Dubai Police, RTA, Dubai Municipality, Civil Defence, and the Emirates Council for Rural Development, the festival showcases the intersection of art, culture, and heritage, making Dubai a vibrant canvas for creativity and innovation.
