15th IRENA Sets Agenda for Global Renewable Energy Transition
The 15th Session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly began today, marking the first major international energy meeting of 2025.
Held under the theme ‘Accelerating the Renewable Energy Transition – The Way Forward,’ the two-day event gathers ministers, high-level delegates from 170 Member States, CEOs, youth representatives, and experts to foster cross-sectoral collaboration on renewable energy advancements.
Discussions center on ambitious goals, including tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0), and promoting energy transitions in emerging economies. Innovative financial mechanisms to support renewable energy deployment in developing countries are also key topics.
IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasized the urgency of renewable energy in addressing global challenges.
“Amid rapid geopolitical shifts and technological breakthroughs like AI, renewables must remain a top priority to achieve climate and sustainable development goals,”
he said.
Slovenia’s Minister of Environment, Climate, and Energy, Bojan Kumer, highlighted the importance of unity.
“No country can achieve this transition alone. Collaboration is essential to ensure a just, inclusive, and competitive energy future,”
he stated. Slovenia, presiding over the assembly, pledged to foster dialogue and partnerships for global decarbonization.
Dr. Amna Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, underscored the UAE’s leadership in renewable energy innovation.
“For 15 years, the UAE has proudly hosted IRENA, driving critical dialogues and solutions to address the climate crisis,”
she said.
The Assembly also kick-starts the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), running from January 12–18, where global leaders will converge to accelerate sustainability efforts.
Pre-assembly discussions held yesterday set the stage for actionable outcomes, reinforcing the event’s role in shaping a sustainable, resilient energy future.
