As temperatures continue to soar across the UAE, the mercury touched a record high of 50.8℃ yesterday, prompting residents to seek some much-needed relief from the scorching heat. Authorities have issued warnings about heat exhaustion and doctors have shared essential tips and precautionary measures to ensure public safety during this extreme weather.
In response to the rising temperatures, several initiatives have been launched to help residents, workers, and delivery riders stay cool and hydrated.
Here are five free ways to beat the heat this summer:
1. Free Rain Shows
Missing the feeling of cool raindrops on your face? Despite the blazing summer heat, Sharjah's Zawaya Walk offers rain shows where you can enjoy a refreshing downpour. These rain shows, free for all, run for 5 minutes each at hourly intervals from 9 am to 12 pm, and then from 5 pm to 11 pm. Bring an umbrella or enjoy the rain unprotected—it's a unique way to cool off.
2. Free Ice Cream
Nothing says summer like ice cream. On July 10 and 11, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is offering free ice cream cones at select Metro stations. Here’s the schedule:
- Mashreq and Ibn Battuta Metro Stations: 11 am to 1 pm, July 10
- Equiti and Onpassive Metro Stations: 11 am, July 11
Workers and delivery riders can also enjoy free ice cream, juices, and cold water from the Al Freej fridge, a volunteer initiative that continues until August 23.
3. Free Buttermilk
Quench your thirst with free buttermilk at Madurai Restaurant in Abu Shagara. Available from 11 am to 3 pm during peak summer hours, this drink not only keeps you cool but also provides essential hydration. Restaurant owner Babu Murugan announced that this initiative would continue throughout the season, offering a healthier alternative to regular milk with its rich electrolyte content.
4. Free Water Bottles and Refill Stations
Staying hydrated is crucial during the summer. Mohammad Dawood, a 68-year-old Pakistani biker in Sharjah, has been distributing free bottled water from his car every weekend for the past four years. In Dubai, the "Dubai Can" initiative provides free water at over 50 refill stations across the city, ensuring residents can easily access clean drinking water all year round.
5. Free Access to Gym
For fitness enthusiasts, Dubai Sports World (DSW) offers free access to its indoor gym from 8 am to 12 pm during the summer. As the region's largest indoor sports destination, DSW also hosts various free activities, including yoga lessons and running clubs, providing residents with plenty of opportunities to stay active while avoiding the outdoor heat.
As the UAE continues to experience record-breaking temperatures, these initiatives offer residents practical and enjoyable ways to stay cool and healthy throughout the summer.
