The UAE Cyber Security Council has warned that 70 percent of smart home devices are at risk of cyberattacks if not properly protected, urging families to tighten digital safeguards as threats escalate.
The council noted that devices such as voice assistants, surveillance cameras, lighting, and air conditioning systems are increasingly targeted by hackers due to weak security awareness and reliance on default settings. Risky practices include leaving devices permanently active, using unsecured networks, or sharing Wi-Fi passwords with guests.
Baby monitors were singled out as a major concern, with the council warning that intruders could hack them to record conversations, track movements, or even communicate directly with children.
To counter risks, households are advised to use strong passwords, update systems regularly, manage devices through a central hub, and separate smart gadgets from the main Wi-Fi network. Families are also encouraged to disable voice assistants when not needed and enable built-in privacy features.
The warning is part of the council’s ongoing “Cyber Pulse” campaign, which this week focuses on raising awareness of smart home security.
