A recent study commissioned by the Institute for Future Readiness highlights the growing importance of lifelong learning among residents of the UAE, with 71% of respondents emphasizing its role in preparing for the future.

The UAE-based organization, dedicated to empowering youth and professionals, surveyed people's attitudes towards continuous learning and skill development.

Industry experts and residents shared insights into the findings. Natalia Miranda, an American expat in Dubai, noted that platforms like Coursera have revolutionized learning, offering free courses on various topics that can be accessed anywhere, anytime.

“Online courses, not just formal certifications, can greatly benefit individuals,”

said Miranda, who has taken courses in digital marketing, sustainability, and graphic design.

Amir Khalil, a 21-year-old student, highlighted the excitement that comes with embracing change through upskilling, stating,

“The key is staying curious and open to new experiences. Every small step helps us stay relevant.”

The study also identified key skills for future-readiness. Leadership and technology skills tied for first place, with 63% of respondents citing their importance. Human skills like empathy, critical thinking, and problem-solving followed closely at 60%. Additionally, 42% of respondents emphasized the need for an entrepreneurial mindset.

Experts agree that continuous learning is essential to staying competitive in an ever-evolving job market. Aws Ismail, General Manager at Marc Ellis, Dubai, stressed the importance of upskilling in response to technological advancements like AI and automation.

As the world becomes more complex, the study suggests that future readiness requires a multifaceted approach to skill development, including learning from peers, experiences, and even life’s challenges.
