H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, has issued Directive No. 1 of 2024 to enhance the Dubai Demand Side Management Strategy 2050 (DSM Strategy 2050).
This initiative, guided by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to propel Dubai towards comprehensive sustainable development.
The updated strategy integrates 12 key programs aimed at advancing energy efficiency across various sectors. These include initiatives such as Net Zero Ready for new buildings, retrofitting existing structures, enhancing efficiency in commercial, government, and industrial sectors, optimizing outdoor lighting, improving cooling systems, and promoting efficient mobility among others.
Key stakeholders involved in executing these programs include prominent entities such as Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Municipality, Roads & Transport Authority, and several government and private-sector organizations. Since its inception in 2013, the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy has collaborated closely with these entities to implement the DSM Strategy.
Aligned with national agendas and strategies such as the UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, the DSM Strategy aims to establish Dubai as a global leader in energy efficiency. By doubling efficiency improvements, it targets achieving substantial savings in electricity, water, and transport fuel consumption by 2050.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, highlighted, "The Strategy aims to establish Dubai as a global benchmark for energy efficiency by achieving savings of at least 30% by 2030 and 50% by 2050 compared to business as usual scenarios."
Ahmed Buti Al Mehairbi, Secretary-General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, emphasized that the updated strategy focuses on seven key implementing mechanisms including policies, data management, government support, awareness, financing, research & development, and collaboration with free zones.
The DSM Strategy 2050 targets significant milestones, including electricity savings of 86.8 Terawatt Hours, water savings of 383.2 Billion Imperial Gallons, and reduced transport fuel consumption by 1,757 million liters by 2050. These measures underscore Dubai's commitment to sustainable growth and a greener future.
The Directive underscores Dubai's commitment to achieving its ambitious sustainable development goals, paving the way for a more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible future.
