At ADIPEC 2024, the world’s largest energy event, industry leaders and government officials emphasized the pivotal role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping a sustainable future for the energy sector. Held in Abu Dhabi, the conference showcased AI as a transformative force capable of accelerating decarbonization and improving operational efficiency across the industry.
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and CEO of ADNOC, underscored the need for collaborative efforts to leverage AI for impactful breakthroughs in energy. In his remarks, Dr. Al Jaber highlighted AI’s potential to fast-track the energy transition and drive economic prosperity, as attendees from around the world discussed AI’s game-changing applications for sustainable energy.
The session “The Power of AI for the Energy Transition” brought together key industry players, including ADNOC Offshore CEO Tayba Al Hashemi, TotalEnergies Chief Data Officer Michel Lutz, and AIQ Acting Managing Director Magzhan Kenesbai. Lutz shared that TotalEnergies uses AI to optimize renewable energy operations and better understand customer needs. The panelists agreed that AI can significantly impact efficiency and sustainability in energy production, but also highlighted the need for responsible use of this technology.
Tengku Muhammad Taufik, CEO of PETRONAS, urged a balanced approach, cautioning that AI’s effectiveness depends on mindful usage and the ethical management of data inputs. Anima Anandkumar, Caltech’s Bren Professor, pointed out that AI not only saves energy and resources but also enhances resilience by predicting climate-related impacts and accelerating responses to natural disasters.
A major highlight at ADIPEC 2024 was the debut of the AI Zone, featuring studios and demo pods that showcased innovations in AI-driven energy solutions. This interactive space provided insights into the latest advancements in AI for energy, demonstrating how these technologies can contribute to the industry’s transition to cleaner, more efficient energy systems.
The event’s AI Conference brought together leaders from the energy, technology, and government sectors to map out a strategic roadmap for AI integration in energy. Innovation showcases featured major players like Microsoft, Carbon Clean, and AIQ, presenting cutting-edge AI technologies aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing operational efficiency.
The Digitalisation & Technology Conference further explored how Industry 4.0 technologies, such as AI, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), can scale sustainable energy practices. Exhibitors also showcased AI-enhanced hardware and solutions to help drive decarbonization in the energy sector.
