Apple announced that its new Apple Intelligence system, a personal AI that combines generative models with personal context to assist users, will begin rolling out in October with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.
Apple Intelligence integrates seamlessly across devices to perform tasks such as rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text using Writing Tools in apps like Mail and Notes. It also includes new features in Photos, such as searching within videos and removing objects from images with the Clean Up tool. Notifications across apps will now be summarized intelligently, and Mail will feature Smart Replies and summaries of important emails.
Siri has been redesigned to be more natural and flexible, with a glowing light wrapping around the screen when active. Siri now understands richer language requests, maintains context across multiple queries, and has enhanced knowledge of device settings and features. Additionally, users will be able to toggle between text and voice commands seamlessly.
Later features will include tools like Image Playground for creating fun images, Genmoji for custom emojis, and Image Wand for refining sketches. Apple Intelligence will prioritize privacy, with many processes occurring on-device and secure data processing in the cloud. Apple also plans to integrate ChatGPT, with privacy protections ensuring user data is never shared.
Apple Intelligence will first launch in the U.S., expanding to other English-speaking regions by the end of the year, with more languages and features to follow in 2025.
