Dubai’s Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station is set for a major expansion after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) signed an agreement with Emaar Properties to increase the station’s capacity and improve passenger experience.

The project responds to growing ridership, especially during New Year’s Eve, national holidays, and major events.

The expansion will increase the station’s area from 6,700 square metres to 8,500 square metres and boost its hourly passenger capacity from 7,250 to 12,320, a 65% rise. Daily capacity is expected to reach up to 220,000 passengers. Enhancements include wider concourse and platform areas, new escalators and lifts, upgraded pedestrian bridges, additional fare gates, and expanded commercial spaces.

The project also integrates public transport connections and other mobility options while improving accessibility for people of determination, senior citizens, and parents with prams. Landscaping and design elements will maintain the station’s visual continuity and ease of movement.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General, said the partnership with Emaar reflects Dubai’s commitment to world-class infrastructure and public-private collaboration. He highlighted the station’s strategic location at the heart of Downtown Dubai, serving both tourists and residents, and supporting the city’s preparation for global events.

Emaar’s Founder, His Excellency Mohamed Alabbar, described the project as an investment in quality of life, aiming to reduce travel times and enhance visitor experiences in one of the city’s busiest precincts.

Since opening in 2010, the station has seen consistent growth, with annual ridership rising from 6.13 million in 2013 to nearly 11 million in 2024. The expansion is expected to accommodate future demand and maintain Downtown Dubai as a highly accessible and vibrant urban hub.
