China’s semiconductor sector is witnessing a surge in demand as businesses accelerate their adoption of cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), according to Guo Yufeng, a National Committee member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice General Manager of Phytium Technology Co.

AI Driving Semiconductor Innovation

Guo emphasized that semiconductors are the foundation of technological advancement, playing a critical role in the high-quality deployment of large language models (LLMs). To remain competitive internationally, Chinese semiconductor developers must focus on innovation, industry collaboration, and ecosystem development.

The rise of Hangzhou-based DeepSeek has opened new doors for domestic chip manufacturers, with companies like Phytium Technology adapting their products to support LLMs, achieving performance comparable to leading global models.

Guo highlighted a shift from hardware-centric strategies to algorithm optimization and collaborative computing, unlocking new opportunities for local semiconductor firms.

Strengthening Tech Autonomy & Talent Development

To bridge the gap with global semiconductor leaders, China is prioritizing:

  • Advancing core semiconductor technologies to enhance performance and competitiveness.
  • Developing a robust industry ecosystem to maximize technological advantages.
  • Balancing long-term R&D with immediate industry needs to ensure continuous innovation.
  • Attracting and cultivating top-tier talent through higher education reforms and strategic policies.

Guo stressed that investment in foundational technologies and an open approach to collaboration will be key to sustaining growth. Despite current gaps with global semiconductor leaders, China's independent innovation is accelerating, making progress irreversible.

As AI-driven industries like brain-machine interfaces, humanoid robots, and smart manufacturing expand, high-end chips will remain central to future advancements, positioning China’s semiconductor industry for long-term success.
