The Climate Action Forum, held on the third day of the World Governments Summit 2025, underscored the critical role of ocean ecosystems in climate adaptation and mitigation.
Organized by the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the forum gathered global ocean experts, ministers, and environmentalists under the theme “Oceans Sustainability.”
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, opened the forum with a compelling speech, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative action to protect ocean ecosystems.
“The UAE recognizes that it is in our common interests to act, but more importantly, we have a common duty to act,”
she stated. She highlighted the nation’s commitment to nature-driven solutions, including expanding mangrove cover and designating marine protected areas to combat climate change.
Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Vice President of the Maldives, followed with a keynote speech addressing ocean sustainability and climate resilience. He called for stronger international cooperation, particularly for small island nations facing immediate threats from rising sea levels.
The forum featured four key panel discussions. The first session, ‘Innovating for Blue Tomorrow,’ explored nature-based innovations and financing mechanisms for sustainable coastal development. ‘Zero Waste Ocean’ focused on reducing ocean waste and promoting integrated waste management solutions. ‘Deep Learning for Deep Seas’ examined AI-driven technologies in ocean research, including autonomous underwater vehicles and advanced sensors. The final session, ‘Ocean Sustainability and Climate Change,’ addressed the challenges of climate change on marine ecosystems and proposed solutions for sustainable ocean management.
Among the notable attendees was HE Dr. Anxious Jongwe Masuka, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, who was honored with the Best Minister Award at the summit.
The forum reinforced the importance of global collaboration in safeguarding the oceans and ensuring a sustainable future.
