Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Siemens Energy have launched the second phase of their groundbreaking AI-powered Plant Intelligent Controller project at the Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Complex, the UAE’s largest power plant.
The initiative follows the first phase’s success, which boosted efficiency by 2.2%, saved fuel, and cut 35,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per power block annually.
The new agreement, signed during the 27th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) in Dubai, was overseen by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DEWA’s MD & CEO.
DEWA’s Executive Vice President Nasser Lootah and Siemens Energy Senior Vice President Waheed Abbasi formalized the deal, with officials from both organisations in attendance.
Al Tayer highlighted that the project aligns with Dubai’s vision for sustainable development and AI-driven infrastructure.
“Our aim is to make DEWA the world’s first AI-native utility and reinforce Dubai’s position as a future-ready city,”
he said, noting that the AI Plant Intelligent Controller was developed by a team of Emirati specialists in collaboration with Siemens Energy.
Abbasi emphasized AI’s transformative role in the energy sector, describing it as “a catalyst for digital transformation” that enables cleaner and more reliable power while accelerating progress toward net-zero emissions.
Lootah added that the collaboration has already yielded “exceptional results in improving operational efficiency and reducing emissions” and that AI and machine learning will remain central to DEWA’s long-term operational strategy.
The Plant Intelligent Controller uses AI and digital twin-based closed-loop systems to optimise performance, reduce fuel consumption, and adapt dynamically to grid demands, positioning DEWA at the forefront of smart, sustainable energy management.
