Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is accelerating the development of Hatta through a suite of sustainability driven projects that align with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the vision of the UAE leadership.
The initiatives position Hatta as a global model of balance between people and nature while strengthening its role as a key tourism and investment destination.
DEWA’s Managing Director and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, said the organisation’s work supports Dubai’s broader plans to enrich community life in Hatta and advance its competitive standing. He noted that the strategy aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai Social Agenda 33, reinforcing efforts to preserve the region’s natural and historical heritage.
Hatta has gained international attention after being named one of the 50 most beautiful small towns in the world by Condé Nast Traveller. DEWA is contributing to its development through major energy and water projects, including the GCC’s first pumped storage hydroelectric power station, capable of delivering full grid power within 90 seconds.
The authority has also completed a 30 million imperial gallon desalinated water reservoir, microfiltration units for dam water, and strategic water interconnections to enhance resilience. Tourism focused initiatives include the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls project and a Guinness World Records certified mosaic mural honouring the UAE’s Founding Fathers.
Among the standout achievements is the Al Rayan Mosque, which has set three global records in sustainable design. The mosque produces more than its annual energy needs and is the first place of worship to earn LEED Zero Carbon certification. Additional features include advanced air purification, recycled construction materials, an EV charging station and facilities for People of Determination.
