Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has used World Environment Day to spotlight a growing portfolio of clean energy and sustainability projects that position Dubai as a serious contender in the global race to net zero.

Observed on 5th June under this year's theme "Now For Climate," the occasion prompted DEWA to outline progress across initiatives tied to the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, both targeting 100 percent clean energy production by mid-century.

The centrepiece of DEWA's renewable push remains the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world's largest single-site solar facility on the independent power producer model. Current capacity stands at 3,860MW, with a target exceeding 8,000MW by 2030. Clean energy's share of Dubai's energy mix is now projected to hit 36 percent by 2030, up from an original target of 25 percent, avoiding over 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Beyond solar, DEWA operates the region's first green hydrogen project, producing roughly 20 kilogrammes of hydrogen per hour using solar energy, and the GCC's first pumped-storage hydroelectric station in Hatta, a 250MW facility with an 80-year operational lifespan.

On the mobility front, DEWA's Green Charger network has grown to more than 2,223 EV charging points across the city since its 2014 launch.

The authority also reported 10 LEED-certified green buildings under its management, including Al Shera'a, its new headquarters, which is designed to be the world's tallest and largest net-positive government building and is targeting both LEED Platinum and WELL Gold certifications.

"We place sustainability at the core of all our plans,"

said MD and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, reaffirming DEWA's commitment to international environmental standards across all operations.
