Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) provides a motivational and sustainable environment to support women in the workplace and their active participation in sustainable development, as well as ensuring psychological and social stability for working mothers.

Aligned with this vision, DEWA was one of the first government departments to establish nurseries (Childcare Centres) to take care of the children of female employees.

These centres operate at the highest international standards of modern education, providing educational, cultural, and recreational activities that contribute to children’s proper upbringing.

“In line with the vision and directives of the wise leadership, DEWA continues its empowerment efforts through a positive and motivating work environment that support female employees and helps them balance their social and professional lives to achieve success and excellence to empower society. DEWA has established nurseries since 2010 in response to the National Nursery Project, which was launched by H.H. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairwoman of the UAE Gender Balance Council and President of Dubai Women Establishment. This aims to establish nurseries at workplaces for government agencies to enable women to continue their contribution as key partners in the comprehensive development process in the UAE. Today, DEWA has the largest number of childcare centres compared to other government departments in Dubai,”

said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA, noted that the happiness rate of DEWA’s female employees about nurseries was 98.37%, which reflects their satisfaction with the level of care and education. The nurseries contribute to employee job and family stability as they have peace of mind in the presence of their children near them.

DEWA opened the first nursery at its headquarters in February 2010. It accommodates 40 children.

The second at its Sustainable Building in Al Quoz was opened in April 2013 and currently has 48 children.

The third nursery was established at DEWA’s Al Warsan building and has 102 children.

The fourth nursery was opened in Al Ruwayyah and accommodates 68 children. Children are taught in Arabic and English according to the British curriculum in addition to Islamic education.

The total number of children who have graduated from DEWA’s nurseries is 389 children.

The nurseries have been designed according to the highest international standards in education and healthy upbringing. DEWA is keen to develop the capabilities and skills of female employees working in nurseries by providing them with specialised training to keep pace with the latest developments in the educational field.

In 2019, DEWA’s Childcare Centres won the ‘Founding Leader Award for Distinguished Schools’, which was presented by the Ministry of Education for its care of children in a safe, healthy and convenient environment that meet the highest international and educational standards.
