DEWA to Transition to Cubic Metres for Water Consumption Measurement in March 2025

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that it will officially adopt the cubic metre as the standard unit for measuring water consumption starting from the March 2025 billing cycle.

This move aligns with Cabinet Resolution No. (85) of 2023 and Ministerial Resolution No. (43) of 2024, issued by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, which mandates the discontinuation of the imperial gallon (IG) unit in water meters across the UAE.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, emphasized the importance of this transition, stating,

"Adopting the cubic metre as a globally recognised unit is a significant step towards aligning with international best practices. This will enhance our services and support DEWA’s leadership in innovation and sustainability, ultimately benefiting our customers and stakeholders."

DEWA’s current smart meters are already compatible with the cubic metre measurement system, so customers will not need to replace their meters. To ensure a smooth transition, DEWA will feature both cubic metres and imperial gallons on water bills and customer dashboards as part of a preparatory phase, ahead of the final adoption in March 2025.

Customers will be notified of the change through official communication channels in the lead-up to the transition, ensuring clarity and ease of understanding.
