Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has recorded measurable improvements in solar photovoltaic (PV) system performance through its Autonomous Soiling Detector; an innovative device designed to monitor and reduce energy losses caused by dust accumulation on solar panels.

Prototype testing conducted at DEWA’s head office parking facility demonstrated that the detector reduced dust-related efficiency losses by around 10 percent, while also lowering cleaning and maintenance costs.

The Autonomous Soiling Detector works by analysing solar radiation levels and comparing the actual power output of photovoltaic panels with the expected ideal production under predefined conditions. This comparison allows the system to quickly identify drops in performance and accurately quantify the impact of dust and soiling. As a result, operators can take timely action, such as scheduling cleaning or making operational adjustments, to optimise energy generation.

The system provides an automated and data-driven approach to monitoring solar panel performance, helping reduce unnecessary maintenance while improving the effectiveness of scheduled cleaning cycles. Operational trials showed improved maintenance planning and more efficient cleaning decisions based on precise, real-time performance data.

Reflecting its innovation and technical value, the Autonomous Soiling Detector has been granted patents by the GCC Patent Office as well as in several international markets, including Canada, Jordan, India, Australia, Japan, and Spain.

DEWA stated that the project highlights the capability of its teams to develop practical, scalable solutions that enhance renewable energy efficiency and operational performance. The detector supports DEWA’s broader clean energy objectives by improving the reliability and productivity of solar PV systems, while also contributing to cost savings and long-term sustainability.
