HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently visited the 2,400MW Hassyan Power Complex to assess the progress of the project, which is powered by natural gas under the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model.
The Hassyan Complex is central to DEWA's efforts in supporting the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 initiative and advancing Dubai's Clean Energy Strategy 2050. Al Tayer emphasized the significance of the project in reducing emissions from power generation and diversifying the emirate’s energy mix.
“This complex is vital to enhancing Dubai's energy security and reducing carbon emissions, aligning with the UAE’s strategic goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050,”
he said.
The Hassyan Power Complex is one of several major projects under DEWA’s portfolio, including the Jebel Ali Power and Water Desalination Complex, Al Aweer Power Complex, and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is set to become the largest single-site solar park globally with a capacity of over 5,000MW by 2030. Other key initiatives include the Green Hydrogen project and the Hydroelectric Power Plant in Hatta.
In addition to power generation, the Hassyan Complex features a desalination plant with a production capacity of 180 million imperial gallons of water per day, utilizing seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology. This sustainable method of desalination uses less energy than traditional Multi-Stage Flash distillation, contributing to Dubai’s sustainable water resources and energy goals.
DEWA’s ongoing projects are paving the way for Dubai’s clean energy future, aiming to provide 100% of the city's power from clean sources by 2050.
