Dubai seeks to consolidate its role as a major and pivotal contributor in shaping the future of the global economy and trade.
Dubai is enhancing strategies and investing sustainably in infrastructure and efficient services, while implementing major energy and water projects to ensure resource sustainability and long-term human development.
Enhancing Dubai’s position as a leading global hub in energy and water production
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is advancing Dubai's global energy hub status through strategic clean energy initiatives and water desalination projects, serving over 1.2 million customers. DEWA has halted fossil fuel projects, adopted the IWPP model, and attracted AED 43 billion in private sector investments.
Etihad ESCO
In 2013, DEWA established Etihad ESCO to boost investment in energy efficiency, create jobs, and retrofit over 30,000 buildings by 2030, supporting Dubai's goal to reduce electricity and water demand by 30%.
Green Charger Initiative
DEWA's EV Green Charger Initiative has established over 700 electric vehicle charging stations in Dubai, promoting green mobility. The initiative supports the ‘We the UAE 2031’ vision, aiming for 50% EVs on UAE roads by 2050, with 49,300 electric and hybrid vehicles currently in Dubai.
Positive economic impact
DEWA's Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will reach 5,000MW by 2030, reducing 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. DEWA achieved world-class utility performance, with minimal transmission losses and high revenues. The Hassyan desalination project, using SWRO technology, will boost water production capacity to 670 MIGD by 2027.
Providing job opportunities
DEWA provides numerous job opportunities, emphasizing Emiratisation by training and empowering Emirati youth for technical and managerial roles. It supports clean energy careers, aiming to increase Emirati representation and competitiveness in the energy and water sectors. DEWA employs 10,726 people.
DEWA's R&D Centre and Innovation Centre focus on advanced research in solar energy, smart grids, energy efficiency, and sustainable energy, aiming to position Dubai as a global leader in innovation and clean energy while fostering education and hosting industry events.
The centre supports DEWA’s efforts to develop the capacity of the next generation of innovators in clean energy technologies as well as prepare Emirati calibres empowered with tools for anticipating and shaping a sustainable future for Dubai and the UAE. The Innovation Centre also promotes innovation among individuals and corporates.
