Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) has released a new report highlighting the importance of enhancing food security for communities by leveraging scientific and research advancements in alternative protein.

It navigates the expected changes in Agri-food systems (AFS), which currently provide jobs for approximately 1.23 billion people, supporting 3.83 billion individuals in households linked to AFSglobally.

Titled "Mission possible food security – A role for alternative proteins”, the report is part of the Dubai Future Foundation’s series of reports and initiatives to enhance the readiness of key sectors for future challenges and opportunities. This effort strengthens Dubai’s position at the forefront of global cities in future preparedness.

The Dubai Future Academy, with Dubai Municipality and "Food Tech Valley", launched a future food initiative, gathering experts and startups to explore sustainable food technologies. The event showcased futuristic food samples and discussed technology's potential for sustainable food production.

Global Transformations

The report underscores the vital role of stakeholders—government, companies, consumers—in driving innovation for future food security. With rising meat demand and cultured meat projections, collaboration is crucial to meet the challenge of supplying 374 million tonnes of meat by 2030 amid population growth and income rise.

Plant-Based Meat

The plant-based meat sector in the food industry is rapidly growing, with a projected 20.6% compound annual growth rate by 2030. These products, derived from plants or fungi, offer a popular and accessible alternative to traditional meat, reflecting shifting consumer preferences.

Abdulaziz Al Jaziri, Deputy CEO of Dubai Future Foundation, aims to spark discussions on innovative technologies in food production through a knowledge report. Focused on sustainability, it advocates for AI, bioengineering, and updated regulations to address challenges and seize opportunities, aligning with UAE's food security strategies.

A recent report reveals that 57% of fermentation-focused protein companies emerged in the last three years, with $5 billion invested from 2016 to 2022. The precision fermentation industry made $1.3 billion in 2021, projected to hit $34.9 billion by 2031. Recommendations stress strict adherence to safety standards, legislative support, increased funding, and consumer engagement for sustainable growth.
