The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) has strengthened its position as a strategic gateway to the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region for Chinese financial institutions and multinational corporations.

As Chinese companies continue to seek opportunities in the MEASA region and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) member countries, DIFC provides a vital link to these markets through Dubai's robust connectivity.

In 2024, DIFC has seen an increase in interest from Chinese banks, wealth management firms, and corporations, driven by 40 years of diplomatic relations between the UAE and China. Major names in the Chinese banking sector, including Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, have established operations at DIFC, with 30% of these entities being Global Fortune 500 companies.

DIFC also serves as the UAE’s only hub for Chinese financial firms, which collectively account for over 30% of the Centre’s total Banking and Capital Markets assets. Chinese banks are actively involved in bond listings on Nasdaq Dubai, contributing to projects in renewable energy, desalination, and clean transportation. Notably, in November 2024, China’s Ministry of Finance listed bonds worth USD 2bn.

The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) has also seen growing interest from Chinese wealth and asset management firms, hosting events to attract further investment. Arif Amiri, CEO of DIFC Authority, emphasized that DIFC continues to be the preferred platform for Chinese businesses, fostering economic growth in the region.

In 2024, China announced 25 foreign direct investment projects in Dubai, totaling USD 122mn, underscoring the increasing role of Chinese investments. With trade between China and the UAE reaching USD 81bn in 2023, Dubai remains a key destination for Chinese investments, positioning itself as a critical business partner in the Arab world.
