dnata has announced a €25 million investment to build a next-generation cargo facility at Milan’s Malpensa Airport, marking a major step in the company’s plan to expand its cargo footprint in high-growth markets.
The project will be developed through Airport Handling, dnata’s wholly owned subsidiary in Italy, following a competitive tender by the SEA Group. The new 10,000-square-meter facility will sit within Malpensa’s Cargo City and is designed to handle more than 100,000 tonnes of cargo annually. It will support a full range of goods, including perishables, pharmaceuticals, dangerous goods, and oversized shipments.
The expansion is expected to create 200 jobs and further strengthen Airport Handling’s position as Italy’s leading ground services provider. The company currently serves over 60 airlines and manages 80,000 flights a year across Milan’s airports, with recent growth extending to Rome Fiumicino.
Sustainability features form a core part of the development. Plans include photovoltaic panels, advanced insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and systems that maximise natural light to reduce overall energy consumption. The site will also incorporate infrastructure to support low-emission ground operations.
The facility is scheduled to open in September 2027. Executives from dnata, Airport Handling, and SEA Milan Airports said the investment reflects strong long-term cargo demand in the region, driven by e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, and perishables, while reinforcing Malpensa’s role as a key logistics hub in Europe.
dnata, which handled 3.1 million tonnes of cargo globally in the 2024–25 financial year, said the Milan project aligns with its broader strategy to develop advanced, future-ready cargo infrastructure across its international network.
