dnata has entered a joint venture with Azerbaijan’s Silk Way Group to establish ground handling and cargo operations at the upcoming Alat International Airport, marking a major expansion of the company’s global aviation footprint.
The partnership will launch alongside the airport’s opening in April 2027 and aims to position Baku as a key logistics hub in the Caucasus region.
The venture will leverage dnata’s international expertise and Silk Way Group’s strong local presence to deliver a comprehensive range of aviation services. Initially focused on ground handling and cargo, the partnership will later expand into catering, freight forwarding, de-icing, and other support operations, offering a complete service platform for airlines and airport partners.
Alat International Airport, located in the Alat Free Economic Zone, will feature advanced logistics facilities capable of processing over 500,000 tonnes of cargo annually, with projected growth of 5% each year. The project is expected to create more than 1,000 local jobs and provide extensive training opportunities, supporting the development of Azerbaijan’s aviation workforce.
Dnata CEO Steve Allen said the collaboration represents a strategic investment in the region’s fast-growing logistics sector, ensuring world-class operational standards from the airport’s first day of operation. Silk Way Group President Zaur Akhundov added that the partnership reflects a shared vision to transform Azerbaijan into a leading regional aviation and logistics hub.
When completed, Alat International Airport will feature an 18-stand apron, a 4,000-meter runway, and a modern air traffic control center. Together with the Alat Free Economic Zone’s multimodal infrastructure, it is set to play a central role in advancing Azerbaijan’s economic and transport connectivity.
