DP World has appointed Mota-Engil, a leading global construction firm, to spearhead the development of the Banana Port in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
This strategic partnership marks a significant step in transforming the nation into a key trade hub.
The Banana Port project, set to be developed in phases, will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure aimed at reducing business costs and reinforcing the DRC’s economic independence. The first phase includes a 600-metre quay capable of handling 450,000 TEUs annually, alongside a 30-hectare storage area. The second phase will further extend the quay wall by over two kilometers, enhancing the port’s capacity.
The project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs by engaging local enterprises, creating economic opportunities for Congolese workers and businesses. As the country’s first fully-equipped deep-sea port, it will significantly lower transport costs, improve trade efficiency, and bolster key industries such as agriculture and manufacturing.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure that will drive economic growth and unlock new opportunities for the people of the DRC.
