Drydocks World, a DP World company, has joined the Maritime Emissions Reduction Centre (MERC), strengthening global efforts to develop practical solutions for reducing emissions across the maritime sector.

The Athens-based non-profit consortium focuses on accelerating decarbonisation by combining technical expertise, operational insight, and industry collaboration to support the transition toward lower-carbon shipping. MERC was co-established by the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub alongside leading shipowners and with enabling support from Lloyd’s Register.

By joining MERC, Drydocks World brings decades of experience in complex ship repair and retrofit projects, as well as a proven track record in integrating advanced technologies on operating vessels. Shipyards are playing an increasingly critical role in the deployment of energy-efficiency systems, and the company’s involvement is expected to shape how new technologies are assessed, prioritised, and installed across different vessel types.

Nikos Kakalis, Managing Director of MERC, said the addition of Drydocks World provides essential applied engineering experience that complements the centre’s technical and analytical work, helping ensure that emerging technologies can be installed safely, efficiently, and in commercially viable ways.

Captain Rado Antolovic, PhD, CEO of Drydocks World, said the company aims to contribute practical, evidence-based insight to help address the challenges of decarbonising the existing global fleet.

Drydocks World joins MERC during a period of intensified research, including studies into hydrodynamics, wind-assisted propulsion, auxiliary power alternatives, and data-driven optimisation. Founding and partner organisations include Capital Group, Navios Maritime Partners, Neda Maritime Agency, Star Bulk, and Thenamaris (Ships Management) Inc..
