Dubai International Airport (DXB) has once again secured its place as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic in 2024, according to the latest report from Airports Council International (ACI) World.

The recognition underscores DXB’s continued dominance as a global aviation hub, maintaining its lead in international connectivity despite growing competition. Preliminary data shows global passenger numbers soared to nearly 9.5 billion in 2024 — a 9% increase from 2023 and a 3.8% gain over pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Among the top 10 busiest airports worldwide, which collectively handled 855 million passengers, Dubai ranked second overall — just behind Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — and ahead of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. These top airports accounted for 9% of global passenger traffic, marking an 8.8% rise from 2023 and an 8.4% increase compared to 2019.

Cargo operations also saw a strong rebound, with global air freight volumes climbing 8.4% year-on-year to over 124 million metric tonnes — a 3.9% uptick from 2019 figures.

Commenting on the findings, ACI World Director-General Justin Erbacci said,

“Amid global challenges, the resilience of the world’s busiest airports shines. These hubs are vital arteries of trade, commerce, and connectivity.”

Dubai’s performance highlights its pivotal role in international travel and logistics, as the aviation sector continues to recover and grow beyond pre-pandemic benchmarks.
