Dubai-Based Startup Unveils Affordable Electric Vehicle Made from Repurposed Cars

Peec Mobility, a Dubai-based start-up, is making headlines at the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress and Exhibition at Dubai World Trade Centre with its innovative electric vehicle (EV), the ReCar.03.

This groundbreaking EV, initially introduced during COP28 in December 2023, is priced from Dh70,000, significantly cheaper than newly-manufactured EVs which typically start at over Dh100,000.

The ReCar.03 is a repurposed Toyota Camry, transforming a former petrol-powered vehicle into an electric sedan. The technology behind Peec Mobility’s approach involves retaining the original vehicle’s body and chassis, resulting in a 30% reduction in manufacturing costs and 80% less production time compared to new EVs.

Peec Mobility’s founder, UAE-born Zach Faizal, emphasized the company's commitment to offering an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional EVs.

“We’re excited to share the ReCar with our customers as we approach production,”

Faizal said. The ReCar boasts a range of up to 300km on a full charge and features an interior crafted from recyclable materials, along with an updated human-machine interface.

Peec Mobility’s mission aligns with the UAE's Net Zero goals, aiming to cut carbon emissions by repurposing retired petrol vehicles. The company plans to deliver the ReCar in Q2 2025 and seeks to contribute to reducing 23% of emissions from the transportation sector by 2030 by converting 5% of existing vehicles annually.

The number of EVs in Dubai has surged to over 30,000 as of April 2024, according to the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), doubling from the previous year. The UAE aims to have 50% of all vehicles be electric by 2050, marking a significant push towards sustainable transportation.
