The much-anticipated GigaFarm project has officially begun at Dubai Food Tech Valley, a pioneering development aimed at revolutionizing sustainable agriculture.
Launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and led by Wasl, the initiative promises to address global food security challenges through innovative, eco-friendly technologies.
The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by key figures including Dr. Amna bint Abdulla Aldahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Jonathan Reynolds, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, marked a significant milestone for the UAE's agricultural sector. The GigaFarm, developed by ReFarm Global and Intelligent Growth Solutions (IGS), will occupy a 900,000 sq. ft. plot at Food Tech Valley.
The project integrates six complementary technologies in a self-contained, closed-loop system, aiming to maximize resource efficiency and eliminate waste. By 2025, the GigaFarm will produce over three million kilos of food annually, powered by IGS’s AI-driven vertical farming technology.
The GigaFarm project will also play a crucial role in the UAE’s efforts to decarbonize food production, diverting more than 50,000 tonnes of food waste from landfills each year. This move is expected to offset 1% of the UAE’s fresh produce imports, contributing to the country’s National Food Security Strategy 2051.
Hesham Abdulla Al Qassim, CEO of Wasl, emphasized the importance of the project in building a resilient food ecosystem.
"Food Tech Valley is a transformative project designed to decarbonize food production and contribute to global food security,"
he said.
This groundbreaking project places Dubai at the forefront of innovative, sustainable agriculture, setting a new benchmark for technology-driven food production in the region.
