Dubai Chamber of Commerce Boosts Events and Exhibitions Industry with ATA Carnets
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce, one of three chambers under Dubai Chambers, has reported a record increase in the value of goods imported with ATA Carnets in 2023. A total of 5,492 ATA Carnets were issued for goods worth AED 5 billion, marking a significant 47% increase from the previous year.
This growth highlights the strong performance of Dubai's exhibitions, events, and conferences sector, closely linked to ATA Carnets, and reinforces Dubai's reputation as a top global business and events destination.
In just January and February of this year, 1,118 ATA Carnets were issued for goods valued at AED 695 million, indicating ongoing positive momentum in the events and exhibitions sector in Dubai.
ATA Carnets play a crucial role in attracting and organizing international events by facilitating duty-free and tax-free temporary importation of goods for up to one year. This greatly improves the smooth movement and transportation of goods for exhibitions, shows, and events.
Mohammad Ali Rashed Lootah, President and CEO of Dubai Chambers, emphasized the importance of ATA Carnets in boosting Dubai's economic flexibility and supporting various business sectors, particularly by simplifying customs procedures for transporting goods for exhibitions and shows. The ATA Carnet system has positioned Dubai as a global hub for promotional exhibitions, events, and conferences.
Dubai Chamber of Commerce oversees the implementation of the ATA Carnet system in the UAE, collaborating closely with Dubai Customs, the Federal Customs Authority, and chambers of commerce across the country to facilitate the movement of goods and enhance the emirate's competitiveness and business environment.
About ATA Carnets:
Also known as a 'Merchandise Passport,' an ATA Carnet is an international customs document allowing duty-free and tax-free temporary importation of goods for up to one year. It was established by the Istanbul Convention in 1990 under the World Customs Organisation (WCO).
ATA Carnets streamline customs arrangements for marketing representatives, exhibition participants, and business travelers by allowing them to travel to various countries and return home without customs issues or delays. These documents can be used multiple times within one year.
Covered goods include those for trade fairs, such as samples, equipment, and vehicles, while perishable items, consumables, and goods for processing or repair are not covered. ATA Carnets reduce costs for exporters by eliminating VAT and customs duties and simplify border crossings with a single document for all customs formalities.
