Dubai Launches Trial Operation of World's First 3D-Printed Electric Abra
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has commenced the trial operation of the world’s first electric abra manufactured using 3D printing technology.
This innovative initiative, in collaboration with the private sector, highlights Dubai's commitment to integrating advanced technologies and environmental sustainability into its transport infrastructure.
The newly launched abra, capable of carrying 20 passengers, retains the traditional design while incorporating cutting-edge technology. This project aligns with Dubai’s 3D printing strategy, aiming to reduce abra manufacturing time by 90%, lower manufacturing costs by 30%, and cut operation and maintenance expenses by 30%.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, stated,
"The trial operation of the electric abra manufactured using 3D printing technology, alongside the improvement of traditional abra stations, is part of RTA’s master plan to enhance marine transport services in Dubai. This will add significant value to the maritime transport sector."
The abra features the longest monocoque structure created using 3D printing, measuring 11 meters in length and 3.1 meters in width. It operates on an electric propulsion system powered by two 10-kilowatt motors and lithium batteries. The trial run will take place on the TR6 line at Sheikh Zayed Road Marine Transport Station.
Manufactured by Al Seer Marine Company in Abu Dhabi, the abra’s development involved global partners including Mitsubishi for materials, Siemens for programming and calibration, and Torqeedo for electric motors. TASNEEF Company ensured compliance with safety standards.
RTA is also upgrading traditional abra stations in Dubai Creek, used by over 14 million passengers annually. The project includes replacing floating docks, enhancing passenger safety, providing retail spaces, and integrating bike racks. By August 2025, improvements at Dubai Old Souq Station and Al Sabkha Station will be completed.
This development supports the increasing popularity of marine transport in Dubai, especially with the completion of the Dubai Water Canal. Enhanced marine transport facilities will make it a preferred choice for residents and tourists to enjoy Dubai’s scenic waterways.
